Title A name given to the resource Mercedes Livestock Show & Rodeo Lesson Plans Subject The topic of the resource Livestock Show Rodeo Mercedes, Texas Cattle Show Description An account of the resource During these five lessons, the students learned a small portion of what the Rio Grande Valleys culture consists of through the Mercedes Livestock Show and Rodeo. In the first lesson we informed the students about the jobs that are in our community as well as in the livestock show. We must educate our students of the importance of those people and the jobs they do. On Tuesday, the students were able to see what it was like to be a cowboy for a day. They learned new vocabulary words referring to cowboys and their clothing. On Wednesday it went more in dept on the marking/brandings of the cattle. We opened our lesson by talking about the Rio Grande Valleys history and telling the students that back in the day ranchers used these markings to distinguish which cattle belonged to Texas and what cattle belonged to Mexico. On Thursday we wanted to have a designated day for the activities that are in the Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Livestock Show and Rodeo includes a carnival, plenty of food such as turkey legs, barbecue, funnel cake and has a petting area for kids to touch the animals. Lastly, on Friday we decided it was going to be a review and assess day for the students. We wanted the students to review everything from the previous days by using the game jeopardy which is very fun to play for students and it involves team work in action. However, on May 26, 1975, a confrontation between union organizers and El Texano Ranch, in Hidalgo, Reynosa, Mexico erupted into violence as ranch supervisor C.L. Miller shot 11 protestors for intentionally damaging his melon fields. In the subsequent days, organizers continued to protest and local law enforcement were called in on behalf of the growers, who sought to drive the interloping union members off their land. Title A name given to the resource Newspaper clippings for Onion Strike (1979) Description An account of the resource Texas Farmworkers Union launched an onion pickers strike on April 4, 1979, on the farm of Charles Wetegrove, son of Edward Raymond, founder of the city of Raymondville. As with previous farmworker strikes, local law enforcement was brought in by growers as a means to deter picketers and protestors. Organizers, like Juanita Valdez, and others were arrested. As TFW attempted to negotiate higher wages for onion pickers, their efforts were ended prematurely by Othal Brand of McAllen, who brought in his own farmworkers and bought out all the produce in the fields. During the same period, United Farm Workers led a strike of Gulf Distributing Company's fields near Mercedes. UFW advocated for farmworker wage increases from $0.60 to $2.00 per bag of onions. Farmworker unrest spread throughout the Valley, including "sit-down" strikes in Weslaco and Alton.
