This lesson was intended for the students to understand that in order for us to have freedom there have been people who have given their lives for the country’s peace. The importance of patriotism and symbolism. Our lesson was based mainly in Harlon Block a Texas native that formed part of the marines during the time of World War II. Harlon Block played a big role during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was one of the six marines that raised the United States flag on Mount Suribachi in Japan, as a symbol for other marines that it was safe for them to land on Iwo Jima (Harlon Block, 2010). A picture of that moment was taken and this picture became well known around the world as a symbol of courage, patriotism, peace. Harlon Block was killed six days after rising the Flag (Hidalgo County Historical Commission, 2010). A monument was made after the picture and was installed in Washington DC. The same mold was used to make another monument for the Marine Military Academy at Harlingen, TX. The remains of Harlon Block body were laid to rest aside the monument in 1995. He was first brought to Weslaco, TX. City where he and his family lived. Harlon Block was one of the eight football players from Weslaco High School that volunteered to sign up with the marines.
