Place-Based Pedagogy Education
The purpose of a place-based education is to form the main focus of an ethically and politically engaged approach to teaching (Isreael,2012) For example, students can learn about their communities and learn how to care for it as well. Place-based educations provides a framework that connects content with emotions. If the students connect with a particular place through knowledge they will eventually generate feelings toward that place which will lead for them to want to protect and care for that specific location.
Place-based pedagogy education is important for lower grade levels because young students begin to learn to care about specific places. This is of great importance because it encourages students to care for their environment and to willing want to preserve it (Malone,2012). Teacher can apply place-based pedagogy education when teaching a lesson about the importance of caring for our natural resources. Students can learn about how harmful pollution and littering is for their community and think of ways it can be prevented. This is a way to keep them involve and engage in the lesson as well.
The place-based pedagogy helps students engage with new and prior knowledge by including student’s own real-life experiences to what is being taught. Students are already informed of basic events and ideas that shape their communities. It is the teacher’s goal to expand their knowledge by providing more information that contribute to their environment. Once students acquire deeper knowledge on places they already know, they will begin to grow feeling towards that place. Students will connect both prior and new knowledge to create new personal opinions toward their environment and will get engage in wanting to participate in ways they can continue to preserve it as it is.
